The Caprivi Strip is of strategic military importance. During the Rhodesian Bush War (1970–1979), African National Congress operations against the South African government (1965–1994) and the Angolan Civil War, this little finger of land saw continual military action and multiple incursions by various armed forces using the Strip as a corridor to access other territories.

The Botswana government considered the island as an integral part of the Chobe National Park, whereas the Namibian government, and many inhabitants of the eastern Caprivi Strip, held that not only was the island part of the original German–British agreement, but that generations of inhabitants had used it for seasonal grazing, reed gathering as well as a burial site. In December 1999, the International Court of Justice ruled that the main channel, and hence the international boundary, lay to the north of the island, thus making the island part of Botswana and not the Caprivi.

Driving north from Gaborone will take you to Serowe. Just 30 km from Serowe is the Khama Rhino Sancturary where you are guaranteed to see rhino. Francistown is further north and is Botswana's second city. We do not have any hotels in Francistown in our portfolio but for those who want to camp or prefer self-catering ( self contained ) accommodation, Woodlands self-catering ( self contained ) is the best for families and people on self- drive holidays near Francistown in Botswana. Just 200 km Norh of Francistown is Nata. The old Nata Lodge was completely destroyed by a fire in 2008 but Nata Lodge was reopened in 2009. Nata Lodge is on the edge of the Makgadigadi pans in Botswana and is the gateway to the Okavango Delta and Chobe. If you drive west from Nata you will cross the Makgadigadi Pans. The only hotel in this area is in Gweta. However Gweta Makgadigadi lodge and hotels offers a selection of accommodation in the Makgadigadi area.

Your next stop will be Maun, the most southern tip of the Okavango Delta. Maun is the gateway to the Okavango Delta with numerous excellent hotels. You can book Island Safari Lodge here. Thamlakane River Lodge is a new luxury but affordable lodge near Maun in Botswana. From Maun you will most certainly want to visit Moremi and the Okavango Delta.
